How it Happened
The Mariners jumped ahead to an 8-2 lead early, attempting to avoid another close contest with the Gryphons. Despite the early lead, the hosts pulled within reach quickly, with Theriault and Hudson each tallying early scores to bring the Gryphons within two. USMMA continued to hold a lead, but a score from
Jade Ling Eng-Stewart and a triple by Coughlin kept the Gryphons within reach until a late six-point swing in favor of the visitors gave them a nine-point cushion after ten minutes. The Gryphons kept the USMMA offense from extending the lead in the second frame, holding the Mariners to just nine points in the quarter after scoring 24 points in the first. On the offensive end, Eng-Stewart continued a strong return with a long-range connection while Theriault added three more scores from within the arc. Coughlin and Hudson ended the quarter with a pair of late scores, the former connecting from distance and the latter scoring in transition to send the teams into the half separated by just one point.
A 15-2 run to start the third quarter returned control to the visitors, who used a barrage of triples to open up a comfortable lead. Hudson and Theriault continued to score, along with senior
Kaila Dorch, but the Mariners carried a 12-point advantage into the final ten minutes of play. Eng-Stewart added three more scores in the final frame, but the Mariners remained in command. SLC's seniors continued to convert, with
Ariana Spanopoulos joining the effort, but it would not be enough to bridge the gap, sending the Mariners back to King's Point with a win.
