Johnsen Homers as Softball Returns to Bronxville for Home Matchup with Bears

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team fell in both ends of Thursday's home doubleheader against St. Joseph's Brooklyn as the Bears returned to the southeasternmost borough with a pair of Skyline victories.

Notable Performers
  • Caileigh Koenig tossed seven total innings, striking out a pair and inducing 11 flyouts while also tallying a pair of hits and an RBI in game one
  • Kyra Johnsen homered in game one to get the Gryphons on the board
  • Shirin Pechefsky threw the final three innings of the day, keeping SJBK off the board while striking out three

How it Happened

The Bears got going early with three first-inning runs in game one, but the Gryphons looked to rally in the bottom half of the frame. A single down the right field line by Claire Rollins gave the Gryphons a baserunner before Koenig drove one down the left-field line to put runners at second and third. The threat would be eliminated as SLC stranded the pair and remained. A pair of hard hits in the bottom of the third got SLC on the board, with Kyra Johnsen driving one over the left field fence to break the scoreless day for the Gryphons before Rode peppered the same fence for a double. A wild pitch moved the sophomore just 60 feet away before a groundout plated the Burbank. Koenig and the Gryphons escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth to keep the SJBK offense at bay and stay within striking distance.

After an outburst by the Bears in the top of the sixth put the team ahead with some insurance runs, but Gryphons got the offense going once again in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff single through the left side by Malia Rode and a perfectly placed blooper down the left field line by Koenig placed a pair of SLC runners on base, but the next three Gryphons would go down in order to close out the first game of the day.

In game two, the Gryphons struggled to get anything going offensively, with a second-inning single by Boissonnault being erased with an inning-ending double play as the Bears stopped the threat. A walk by Pechefsky and Johnsen's ability to reach on a third-inning error would be the only two other baserunners for the Gryphons as the Bears dominated game two with a 13-0 scoreline.
