BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Behind an 11-kill effort by Gryphon
Kitty O'Sullivan (Los Angeles, Calif., Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy), Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball topped Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) rival College of New Rochelle, 3-0, in conference action Tuesday at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center.
Sarah Lawrence (11-11, 3-0 HVWAC) remains unbeaten in league play, while the Gryphons dealt College of New Rochelle (8-10, 3-1 HVWAC) its first conference loss of the season.
The opening set saw Sarah Lawrence break open a 7-1 lead thanks to back-to-back service aces by first-year player
Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's). Though the Blue Angels cut the gap to 8-7, the Gryphons went on a 12-4 run to lead 20-11, and the hosts closed out the set, 25-15.
In the second set, sophomore
Xina Graham-Vannais (Newtown, Pa., George School) served Sarah Lawrence to 10 unanswered points to take a 11-2 advantage. Though the Gryphon attack was fierce, College of New Rochelle was doomed by its own mistakes, as all 10 points in the streak were scored by errors charged to the Blue Angels. O'Sullivan closed out the set on a service ace, 25-9.
The third set saw Sarah Lawrence open up a 14-4 lead thanks to five early kills by O'Sullivan. College of New Rochelle whittled the deficit to 14-8 before the Gryphons' momentum carried the Green and White to a 25-14 set and the 3-0 sweep of the match.
O'Sullivan's 11 kills led all players, while the sophomore added nine digs. Spanbroek led all players with 14 digs, and first-year player
Jomana Abdallah (Anaheim, Calif., Fairmont Prep Academy) added 12 digs. HVWAC Rookie of the Week
Molly Busk (Corbett, Ore., Corbett) added two kills and six digs, while senior setter
Brooklynn Moore (Oakland, Calif., Santa Catalina) totaled 18 assists.
For the Blue Angels, Megan King notched a team-high five kills to accompany 10 digs; Cydney House led the visitors with 11 digs.
Sarah Lawrence is on the road Wednesday, as the team heads to face Maritime College at 7 p.m. The Gryphons defeated the Privateers, 3-0, earlier this season and can regain their winning record with a repeat of their previous victory.
