Women’s Volleyball Advances to HVWAC Semifinals

Box Score
BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In one of the team's best performances of the season, No. 2 seeded Sarah Lawrence College knocked off No. 7 Medgar Evers College, 3-0, in the quarterfinal round of the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Volleyball Championship on Saturday at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center.

Sarah Lawrence (17-13, 5-1 HVWAC) now travels to face College of New Rochelle (11-13, 4-2 HVWAC) in the semifinal round at Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. The penultimate round begins at 3 p.m. with the championship final at 5 p.m. In the other semifinal, top-seeded St. Joseph's College Brooklyn (14-6, 6-0 HVWAC) faces the host Steels (9-5, 3-3 HVWAC).

The opening set saw the Gryphons jump out to a 15-3 lead before winning seven of the last eight points of the 25-7 set. First-year player Zoë Spanbroek (Boca Raton, Fla., Saint Andrew's) clinched the set with back-to-back service aces; she notched three aces in the set.

In the second set, Molly Busk (Corbett, Ore., Corbett) served Sarah Lawrence for 12 straight points, scoring six aces in the term of service. Busk finished the day with eight aces, matching the team's season high. With the Gryphons in front 19-4, the Cougars were re-energized by a 6-1 run but the momentum shift failed to halt Sarah Lawrence's 25-11 win.

Sarah Lawrence won the first seven points of the third set thanks to serving by senior Brooklynn Moore (Oakland, Calif., Santa Catalina), playing in front of a home crowd for the final time. Moore had four aces in the set and six for the evening. Though Medgar Evers managed to string together several runs, the Gryphons' superiority triumphed, and the Green and White completed the sweep with a 25-13 set.

Rookie Jomana Abdallah (Anaheim, Calif., Fairmont Prep Academy) racked up a match high 11 kills to lead the Gryphons' attack, reaching double figures for the third time in the last four matches. Busk tallied 11 digs on the defensive side, while Moore totaled 22 assists.

For the Cougars, Catheline Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y., Fashion Industries) had team-highs with four kills and five digs.
