PURCHASE, N.Y.
– Despite heavy downpours and the threat of severe weather, Sarah Lawrence College women's cross country competed for the first time in 2012 at the 5th Annual Purchase College Men's and Women's Cross Country Invitational on Saturday.

Four runners represented Sarah Lawrence, including sophomores Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y., Mexico) and Alyssa Sprague (Mexico, N.Y., Mexico) (Mexico, N.Y., Mexico), who finished back-to-back in 20th and 21st-place, respectively. Emery completed the rain-soaked, 5 km course in 25:52.9, while Sprague crossed the line a half second later in 25:53.4.

In her collegiate debut, first-year runner Pauline Stanfiel also finished among the top half of the field, placing two spots later—in 23rd—with a time of 26:38.4. Sophomore Caroline Kjellberg rounded out the team by clocking in at 34:35.0.

Head Coach Nephi Tyler was pleased with his team's performance. “Liz [Emery] ran strong and steady to lead our front trio over the rain-soaked course. She is one of our most-consistent runners at every venue. Liz, Alyssa [Sprague] and Pauline [Stanfiel] are the core of our team, and for them to keep together as a pack was gutsy and bodes well for us in our future team scoring.

“All of our runners should be proud of the solid effort they put in today,” continued Tyler. “I'm excited to see how strong we place as a team next week, when we run as a full squad with our other top runners joining them.”

The Gryphons are back in action next weekend, when they head to LIU Post on Saturday, Sept. 15.
