Blanchet, Sullivan and Zavgren Named All-HVIAC

NEW YORK—On Sunday, the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) announced the 18 women named to the 2013 All-HVIAC Women's Soccer Team, recognizing outstanding play throughout the past season. Among the recipients, Sarah Lawrence College junior Elle Blanchet (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) and rookies Shannon Sullivan (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional) and Sadie Zavgren (Wilton, N.H./Homeschooled) were honored.

In the team's first season as a varsity program, SLC climbed the ranks to finish third in the regular season rankings. The Gryphons advanced to the postseason and made an appearance in the semifinals of the HVIAC Championship.

Blanchet, one of the team's tri-captains, started all 14 games for the Gryphons in 2013. She scored her first varsity goal in a 3-2 loss to York College on Sept. 5, and as a defender, she totaled 12 shots on the season.

Sullivan, also playing on the back line, started in 13 games and played a key role in several defensive performances. She helped the Gryphons record the program's first-ever shutout in a 1-0 win over St. Joseph's College Brooklyn on Oct. 2. Later, Sullivan defense helped the Green and White post back-to-back shutouts in conference games against Medgar Evers College, 6-0, and Berkeley College, 0-0.

Zavgren, who also served as a captain, joined Blanchet as the two Gryphons who played every minute of action this season. In her rookie season, Zavgren led the team in shots and was one of four players to post two goals on the year. The first-year defender scored her first career goal against Medgar Evers (Oct. 14) and had an assist and a goal in a 3-1 win over Yeshiva University (Oct. 22).
