YONKERS, N.Y.—Despite scoring the team's first two goals of the season, Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer was relegated to a "No Contest," in Thursday's Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Vaughn College. After 67 minutes, lightning forced suspension of the game and cleared the teams from Fleming Field.
As per NCAA rules, the game will not be included in win-loss records or season statistics, as 70 minutes must be played for a suspended soccer game to count as official.
Rookie Roland Wynter (New York, N.Y./Lower Manhattan Arts Academy) put the Gryphons on the scoreboard in the 37th minute. He capitalized on a ball misplayed by the Warrior back line, and Wynter found the back of the net on a shot over the head of Vaughn's goalkeeper.
SLC extended its lead just two minutes later. Clarence Johns (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) fired a header that rebounded off the Vaughn goalie, and Sebastiano Foresi (New York, N.Y./United Nations International School) was in position to put away the rebound to give the Gryphons a 2-0 advantage.
With ominous clouds bearing down on the field, the game became a race against mother nature, but in the end, inclement weather forced the suspension of the game just 2:25 from an official contest.
Sarah Lawrence returns to the pitch on Saturday when the Gryphons head to face HVIAC opponent Webb Institute at 2 p.m.
