Box Score YONKERS, N.Y.—Playing against the defending Skyline Conference champions, Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer was clipped by Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.), 3-0, in a league game at Tibbetts Brook Park on Wednesday.
Sarah Lawrence (1-7, 0-2 Skyline) faced tough opposition from the Knights, as the Gryphon back line fought to keep the visitors' offense in check. While the Gryphons eventually yielded to the Knights, the three-goals are the fewest that Mount Saint Mary (6-2-1, 3-0 Skyline) has scored against a Skyline opponent this season.
After both teams were scoreless through 20 minutes, MSMC looked destined to score on a close-range header, but SLC defender
Keith Burns (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) stepped in to fend off the shot on the goal line, preserving the double-shutout.
Unfortunately, on the subsequent corner kick, MSMC put away the first goal of the game, and the team added another goal two minutes later to take a 2-0 advantage.
SLC forwards
Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy) and
Finn MacMillan (London, U.K./Bryanston) broke through the Knight back line but were unable to get in position to pull the trigger in the first half.
In the second period, rookie
Varun Kelkar (Nagpur, India/Jenks) recorded the Gryphons' first shot, putting a long free-kick attempt just over the cross bar. MacMillan also notched a shot in the period, missing the right-side post.
MSMC rounded out the scoring with a penalty-kick goal in the 53rd minute, and the Green and White prevented any other goals for the final 37 minutes.
The Knights racked up 27 shots but were only able to keep 12 on target. SLC goalkeeper
Nikos Efstratudakis (London, Ontario/American Community School of Athens) finished the day with eight saves, snapping a three-game streak with double-digit saves.
Sarah Lawrence is on the road this weekend, traveling to Skyline opponent St. Joseph's Long Island on Saturday before taking on Cooper Union on Sunday.
