Box Score 2 OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.—The 2014 campaign continued as Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball squared off in its first-ever Skyline Conference tri-match at Clark Athletic Center on Saturday. The Gryphons fell to host SUNY College at Old Westbury, 3-1, before being defeated by The Sage Colleges, 3-0.
Sarah Lawrence (2-13, 0-3 Skyline) opened the day by taking the first set against Old Westbury (1-11, 1-2 Skyline). After falling behind, 6-2, the Gryphons rallied to tie the score, 7-7. Rookie
Lenie Siegel (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) served up seven-straight points, giving the Gryphons a 15-9 edge, and the Green and White held on to secure a 25-17 win.
In the second set, OW sprinted out to a daunting 13-4 lead. Siegel again strung together a run that closed the gap to 13-10, and the Gryphons came within one point at 15-14. Another Panther run sealed the set, as OW evened the match, 25-19.
The third set again saw an early run from OW, and the Gryphons found themselves trailing, 11-3. Once again, the Green and White rallied, tying the set at 15-15. After a five-point OW run was followed by a three-point streak by SLC, Old Westbury finally clinched a 25-19 set by winning five of the last six points.
Helped by a pair of service aces from senior
Alexis Chapman (Bend, Ore./Bend), SLC took a 10-5 edge early in the fourth set. From there, Old Westbury took over momentum, tying the set 10-10 en route to a 15-11 lead. Another late rally broke open the match, and SLC was left empty-handed, 25-18.
Siegel finished with a team-high seven kills, while Chapman added five. Siegel and Chapman combined for eight of the Gryphons' 14 service aces, while each recorded 10 digs on defense. Senior
Xina Graham-Vannais (Newtown, Pa./George School) recorded 15 assists, her second-highest total in her fifth match as the primary setter.
The Gryphons had no attack errors in the first set against Sage (18-4, 4-0 Skyline), but the Gators swept the match handily.
Siegel again led her team on offense, added six kills in the match. Graham-Vannais had a half dozen assists and the team's only service aces in the match. On defense, Siegel led the squad with five digs, while Graham-Vannais and libero
