Race coordinators published amended results on Oct. 13, 2014.BRONX, N.Y.—In the final race of the regular-season, Sarah Lawrence College men's cross country posted an 11th-place finish at the 2nd Annual City College of New York Classic at Van Courtlandt Park on Sunday.
Climbing the team standings, sophomore
Pat Newsom (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) emerged as the Gryphons' top runner for the first time this season and the second time in his career. He was just 48 seconds of his career best, crossing the line in 29:54, good for 37th place in the field of 139 runners.
On the tough 8K course, rookie
Daniel Higinbotham (Alpharetta, Ga./Homeschooled) finished off the nearly 5-mile course in 30:13, taking 44th overall and slipping to the team's No. 2 spot for the first time.
Rookie
Jules Christeson (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco Waldorf) and sophomore
Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) finished back-to-back, both setting career bests in the process. Christeson just missed the 34-minute barrier, crossing the line in 34:00.1, while Heftel came across in 34:10, as both runners placed among the top 100.
Sophomore
Jacob Zhu (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Jianping) rounded out the team's scoring runners, posting a time of 36:27 and improving on his previous race by nearly a minute and a half.
Senior
Sabiel Chapnick (New York, N.Y./Excel) showed dramatic improvement in his third career race, bettering his previous record by a wide margin for a season-best 36:39.
Sarah Lawrence now prepares for the 2014 Skyline Conference Championship, Oct. 26, hosted by Mount Saint Mary College. The team rounds out the season with a post-championship run at the NJIT Russo Halloween Classic on Nov. 2.
