Box Score NEW YORK—Controlling the game's tempo from start to finish, Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer succeed in knocking off York College (N.Y.), 2-0, in a non-conference game at Randall's Island Park on Sunday.
Sarah Lawrence (3-7) posted two shots on goal in the first six minutes, including a strike by rookie
Emily Benjamin (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) and another by senior
Kaylen Dornan (San Diego, Calif./High Tech High International).
In the 16th minute, Dornan fed a through ball down the middle that found rookie forward
Luana DeBorst (Heredia, Costa Rica/European School of Costa Rica), who netted the first goal of the game, her team-leading third of the season.
SLC went on to post a total of 12 shots in the opening half, while York (2-8) was held to just one shot, which drifted harmlessly wide of the goalpost.
The second stanza again saw the Gryphons record two early shots with senior
Elle Blanchet (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) getting in on the action.
Less than 15 minutes into the half—the 60th minute of the game—sophomore
Sadie Rose Zavgren (Wilton, N.H./Homeschooled) eluded the defense and put an insurance goal on the board for a 2-0 SLC lead. The strike put Zavgren back in possession of a share of the team's career scoring record.
SLC kept York from tallying a shot in the half, locking up the victory. Zavgren finished with a team-high six shots, while three shots apiece were attempted by Benjamin, DeBorst and Dornan.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Addie Rosenberg (New York, N.Y./Fusion Academy) picked up her third win of the season without having to make an official save; the complete-game shutout is the second of her career. Defenders
Shannon Sullivan (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional),
Clarke Powell (Snellville, Ga./Shiloh),
Lindsay Levy (Potomac, Md./CESJDS), and
Maya Ahmed (Dubai, UAE/American School of Dubai) also contributed to the shutout by playing the full 90 minutes.
The shutout is the program's fifth in its two-year varsity history.
Sarah Lawrence returns to action on Thursday when the Gryphons travel to Skyline opponent Purchase College. SLC returns home Saturday to face St. Joseph's College Long Island at Tibbetts Brook Park.
