Men's Soccer Ends Season at Maritime

Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer concluded the 2014 season with a showdown against Maritime College at Kaplan Field on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Though the Gryphons were able to get on the scoreboard in the second half, SLC was dismissed, 5-1, to round out the year.

Sarah Lawrence (2-14, 0-9 Skyline) posted four shots in the opening half. In the fifth minute, junior Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) fired a free-kick attempt from distance that was destined for the right side of the goal before being scooped up by the keeper.

In his final collegiate game, senior Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy) also fired a long shot in the early goings, missing to the outside of the left post.

Maritime (9-7-1, 5-3-1 Skyline) put its first goal in the net in the 14th minute and would score twice more in the first period.

First year Finn MacMillan (London, U.K./Bryanston) fired a shot from 30 yards, and classmate Alix Legrand (Damascus, Pa./Scranton Prep) also notched a shot from similar range. Both shots were met by Maritime keeper Karl Weber, who had three saves in his 45 minutes of play.

SLC goalie James Berry (New York, N.Y./Kent) recorded a pair of saves before sophomore Nikos Efstratudakis (London, Ontario/American Community School of Athens) minded the net for the final minutes of the season.

The 75th minute saw MacMillan record the Gryphons' last goal of 2014 and his team-leading fifth of the season. From 40 yards out, the rookie sailed a shot over an out-of-position goalkeeper, and the ball seemed destined to sail over the goal itself. At the final moment, the strike bent toward the ground and found the top left corner of the net.

While Sarah Lawrence was unable to beat any Skyline opponents in the squads first year in the league, the year was not without its highlights. The Gryphons' won their first overtime games on record, coming out triumphant in both their extra-time contests this season.

Individually, Pujari's career ends with the senior atop the program's record board for goals (29), assists (11), points (69), shots (137) and game-winning goals (6).

In goal, both Efstratudakis and Berry improved upon SLC's previous season records in save percentage and goals-against average.

The Gryphons will return to the pitch in April for their spring season and are slated to play their 2015 opener on Friday, Sept. 4.
