Box Score 2 NEW YORK—Capped off by an exciting overtime goal, Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer defeated The Cooper Union, 1-0, in a non-conference game at Randall's Island Park on Sunday.
The win rounds out a 1-1 weekend for the Gryphons after Sarah Lawrence was defeated by Skyline Conference rival St. Joseph's College Long Island on Saturday.
In Sunday's game, Sarah Lawrence (2-8, 0-4 Skyline) both defenses were assertive, and neither team was able to record a shot in the first 20 minutes of back-and-forth play. After SLC drew two corner kicks, junior
Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) was the first Gryphon to put a shot on goal, followed shortly after by a threatening strike from rookie
Varun Kelkar (Nagpur, India/Jenks).
SLC put three of its four first-half shots on goal, while Cooper Union had three shots, two of which had to be saved by junior
James Berry (New York, N.Y./Kent). With both goalkeepers holding strong, the teams went into halftime scoreless.
In the second half, sophomore
Roland Wynter (New York, N.Y./Lower Manhattan Arts Academy) and senior
Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy) recorded their first shots of the game. Tension mounted as the teams' aggressive play intensified with time waning in the game. Despite three CU shots in the last five minutes, the game remained scoreless at the end of regulation.
SLC remained in full control in the overtime period. Less than three minute into extra time, junior
Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) fed the ball to the outside corner, where Kelkar injected it into the box. Rookie
Finn MacMillan (London, U.K./Bryanston) forwarded the pass to Pujari, who netted his team-high third goal of the season to close out the overtime win.
With the team's second OT win this season, SLC men's soccer improved to 2-2-1 in overtime games since 2009. The shutout is the team's first since Oct. 15, 2011. Defenders
Amit Sankaran (San Francisco, Calif./Mallya Aditi International),
Colin Magerle (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep),
Tobias Geisler Mesevage (Ghent, N.Y./Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School) and
Keith Burns (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) were all instrumental with complete games on the back line.
In goal for the Gryphons, Berry recorded four saves, while
Nikos Efstratudakis (London, Ontario/American Community School of Athens) finished out the game, making one save between the pipes. Added with nine stops on Saturday, Berry rounded out the weekend with 13 saves in 148.5 minutes.
Sarah Lawrence returns to action on the road against Skyline opponent Farmingdale State on Saturday.
