Women's Volleyball Splits Final Home Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 3 Purchase vs. St. Joseph's-Long Island Box Score

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In the Gryphons' final home matches of the 2014 season, Sarah Lawrence College defeated Purchase College, 3-0, before falling to St. Joseph's College-Long Island by an identical score in Skyline action at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday.

After the match, seniors Alexis Chapman (Bend, Ore./Bend) and Xina Graham-Vannais (Newtown, Pa./George School) were recognized for their contributions to the SLC women's volleyball program. Both end their careers as three-year starters, having missed their respective junior seasons to study abroad in Europe.

Sarah Lawrence (3-21, 1-7 Skyline) began the day with a convincing win over Purchase (2-26, 0-9 Skyline), collecting the program's first-ever Skyline victory. The Green and White opened up an 8-1 lead in the first set and cruised to a 25-18 win. Libero Lin Zhu (Chengdu, China/Chengdu No. 7) served up five service aces in the set.

The second set saw the Gryphons capitalize on eight service aces—from five different players—and 11 Panther errors to earn a 25-13 win.

On her final day of action on her home court, senior Graham-Vannais came alive in the third set, leading all players with four kills and four digs. Sarah Lawrence landed eight kills while committing only a handful of errors, clinching the sweep, 25-16.

Graham-Vannais notched her second double-double of the season, posting a season-high 11 kills along with 12 assists and a block. Fellow senior Chapman added four kills, while sophomore Yolanda Lyne Cando (Arlington, Va./H-B Woodlawn) and rookie Lenie Siegel (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) also recorded four kills in the match.

On defense, sophomore Clarisse Taboy (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/George School) led the defense with seven digs, followed by Graham-Vannais with six. Cando, Chapman and Siegel had three digs apiece. Zhu finished with a season-high eight aces.

In the neutral-site match, St. Joseph's (19-10, 8-1 Skyline) stormed away with a 25-6, 25-5, 25-7 sweep.

The Golden Eagles had little trouble in the first set against the Gryphons. Sarah Lawrence trailed by as many as 12 points in the second set, 15-3, but rallied to narrow the gap to three, 19-16. SLC won three straight points and trailed 23-19 before SJC won the final two points of a 25-19 set.

SLC had St. Joseph's rattled in the third set, forcing a timeout as the Green and White led 8-6. The Golden Eagles collected themselves and went on a tear that sealed victory for the visitors, 25-11.

Siegel had four kills in the match, followed by Graham-Vannais with three. Graham-Vannais added six assists, while Siegel contributed three service aces. Siegel led the SLC defense with seven digs followed by Zhu with six and Chapman with five.

The Gryphons conclude their season on Sunday with a neutral-site match against Yeshiva University on the campus of Purchase College.
