BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Picking up the Gryphons' first win of the year, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball defeated Medgar Evers College, 3-1, in a non-conference match at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Thursday.
Sarah Lawrence (1-2) fell behind early in the first set, as Medgar Evers (1-5) broke open a 10-3 lead to start the match. The Green and White came thundering back, scoring 13 of the next 14 points to take a 16-11 edge. First year
Lenie Siegel (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) and sophomore
Lin Zhu (Chengdu, China/Chengdu No. 7) each tossed up three service aces in the run.
After SLC closed out the first set, 25-17, the team kept the momentum going through the second set. The Gryphons capitalized on the visitors' errors and broke open a 13-5 advantage, cruising to the 25-14 win.
The Cougars came alive in the third set and fended off the sweep. Though SLC led 14-13, a 10-1 run by Medgar Evers all but sealed a 25-16 win for the Cougars, making it a 2-1 match.
Medgar Evers won five of the first six points of the fourth set, but the Cougars cooled quickly. Three straight attack errors put SLC back on top, 6-5. The Gryphons caught fire and soon built a 23-13 lead en route to a 25-18 final set.
Siegel anchored the Gryphon offense with six kills, while senior
Xina Graham-Vannais (Newtown, Pa./George School) had five kills, including the match-winner.
Setters
Clarisse Taboy (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/George School) and
Yolanda Lyne Cando (Arlington, Va./H-B Woodlawn) shared 16 assists in the match, while Zhu and senior
Alexis Chapman (Bend, Ore./Bend) both led the way with five service aces.
On defense, SLC's balanced back line saw Graham-Vannais, Siegel and Taboy notch six digs each.
For Medgar Evers, Kiwelewa Mlimwengu and Kalifa Roberts each had a match-high nine kills, while setter AnnMarie Bernberry had 17 assists. Roberts was the only player with double-digit digs, tallying 11 on the day.
SLC has now won all six meetings with Medgar Evers since 2011.
