Box Score 3 NEW YORK—Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball competed at the 2014 NYU Women's Volleyball Violet Classic, hosted by New York University at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center on Friday and Saturday. In all three matches, the Green and White fell in straight sets, 3-0.
In an unlucky draw for the Gryphons, Sarah Lawrence (1-7) was pitted against tournament co-champions NYU (11-5), Western New England University (11-4) and Stockton College (12-2). Each of the three foes went 3-0 over the weekend, sharing the top spot in the team standings.
Over the course of the weekend, rookie
Lenie Siegel (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) led the SLC attack with five kills. Senior
Xina Graham-Vannais (Newtown, Pa./George School) had four kills, while senior
Alexis Chapman (Bend, Ore./Bend) and sophomore
Monet Thibou (Brooklyn, N.Y./Elisabeth Irwin) had three kills apiece.
Sophomore
Yolanda Lyne Cando (Arlington, Va./H-B Woodlawn) took the driver's seat as setter for the weekend, racking up 13 assists. Cando also led the team in service aces over the three matches.
Libero
Lin Zhu (Chengdu, China/Chengdu No. 7) anchored the Gryphon defense with 17 digs, while Siegel totaled 15 digs. Graham-Vannais and Chapman also reached double figures with 11 digs each.
Hannah Lipschutz (Philadelphia, Pa./Woodlynde) also started in all three matches, contributing two kills and two digs from the front middle.
SLC's 0-3 tournament finish matched the efforts of SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Potsdam, who also had winless weekends.
