Men's Soccer Outlasts King's in 2OT Thriller

Box Score

VALHALLA, N.Y.—Needing an overtime goal in the 108th minute, Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer edged out The King's College (N.Y.), 3-2, in a double-overtime, non-conference game at Vikings Stadium on Wednesday. The win is the first for Head Coach Scott Miller in his debut season at the helm of the SLC program.

Sarah Lawrence (1-4) piled up 10 shots in the opening half, putting nine of them on target. In the 19th minute, the Gryphons finally found the back of the net, putting the first point on the scoreboard. Rookie Varun Kelkar (Nagpur, India/Jenks) fed the ball to senior Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy), and SLC's career scoring leader put the ball home for his first goal of the season.

Just 22 seconds later, the Gryphons pushed hard following the restart, striking a second blow. Sophomore Tahmid Munat (Dhaka, Bangladesh/Notre Dame) fed a pass from the right side that found Kelkar just outside the penalty box. Kelkar lofted a shot over the keeper and just under the crossbar to score his team-leading third goal of the season, putting SLC in front, 2-0.

For King's (1-5), Zach Adams led the Lions attack, scoring a pair of goals to tie the game at 2-2, headed to the intermission.

Both offenses slowed down in the second half, while the defenses held strong. Despite a combined nine shots by the two squads, the ball was kept out of the net, and the 2-2 deadlock carried the game into overtime.

Neither team notched an official shot in the first 10-minute overtime, and the stalemate persisted to a second and final 10-minute stanza.

Pujari came through with three shots in the final period, including the game-winner. Capitalizing on a feed from rookie Alix Legrand (Damascus, Pa./Scranton Prep), Pujari's shot evaded the TKC goalkeeper, solidifying the Green and White victory a mere 2:34 before the match would have been declared a draw.

Pujari finished with a team-high eight shots, followed closely by Kelkar with seven. Legrand had two shots of his own, while Finn MacMillan (London, U.K./Bryanston) and Roland Wynter (New York, N.Y./Lower Manhattan Arts Academy) also got on the stats sheet.

In goal, sophomore Nikos Efstratudakis (London, Ontario/American Community School of Athens) totaled 10 saves, earning a win in his first decision of 2014.

SLC improves to 1-2-1 in overtime games since 2009.

The SLC men's and women's soccer teams each played one game at Vikings Stadium this season, both going to double overtime. The women fell to NJCU in the 109th minute on Sept. 17.

Sarah Lawrence men's soccer squares off against the College of Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline Conference game on the road on Saturday. The Gryphons then face non-conference opponent Lehman College in the Bronx on Sunday.
