Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y.—Despite more than a dozen shots by the Gryphons, Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer fell to Maritime College (N.Y.), 3-0, in a Skyline Conference game at Reinhart Field on Friday.
Sarah Lawrence (2-4, 0-1 Skyline) fared well in the opening half of the team's first-ever Skyline contest. SLC captain
Sadie Rose Zavgren (Wilton, N.H./Homeschooled) recorded the game's first shot on a strike from inside the box that found its way into the hands of keeper Kristen Hoar.
At the other end of the field, Gryphon goalkeeper
Noelle Clark (Yonkers, N.Y./The Calhoun School) faced 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes, handling all seven that came her way between the pipes. In the 43rd minute, Clark made the play of the half, diving to reject a 15-yard shot aimed just inside the left post.
The Green and White defense did its job, sending to halftime without a score by either squad.
In the second half, Maritime (4-5-1, 1-1 Skyline) finally found the back of the net, scoring two quick goals in the first 11 minutes. The Privateers netted their third score in the 60th minute, putting additional pressure on the SLC offense.
SLC rose to the challenge, as senior defender
Elle Blanchet (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) came off the back line to record three shots in the game, including one on goal. Rookie
Clara Ezcurra (Hurlingham, Argentina/St. Hilda's College) added two shots, while classmate
Emily Benjamin (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) put two shots on frame.
While
Addie Rosenberg (New York, N.Y./Fusion Academy) and
Auden Hargrove (Los Angeles, Calif./South Bay Faith Acad.) also recorded shots, the Gryphons' 15 strikes weren't enough to undo the damage, and SLC was sent away with a loss in its first conference game of the season.
The Green and White defense, including
Shannon Sullivan (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional) and
Clarke Powell (Snellville, Ga./Shiloh), held Maritime to eight shots in the second half.
In goal, Clark had 10 saves, reaching double-figures for the second-straight game. Maritime's Hoar saved eight shots.
Sarah Lawrence returns to the pitch on Sunday, when the Gryphons travel to face Lehman College at 10:30 a.m.
