Box Score 2 JERSEY CITY, N.J.—In a pair of non-conference matches, Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball was defeated by NJCU, 3-0, but rebounded to defeat Medgar Evers College, 3-2, at John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center on Saturday.
Against NJCU (1-10), the Gryphons offense struggled to get going. Sarah Lawrence (2-9) was led by rookie
Lenie Siegel (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) with four kills in the match, while senior
Xina Graham-Vannais (Newtown, Pa./George School) recorded eight assists in her first match as the primary setter.
Versus Medgar Evers (2-13), the Green and White found success, rallying to win the match in a five-set thriller. The Cougars turned an 11-11 deadlock into a 25-16 first set win before the Gryphons responded by opening up an 11-3 advantage en route to a 25-17 second set.
After MEC won six of the first seven points of the third set, SLC found itself trailing 2-1 in the set score. The Green and White sprinted out to a 13-5 lead in the fourth set and held the lead until MEC tied the set at 19-19. Sarah Lawrence refocused and took the set, 25-20, extending the match to a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth, SLC went on a 7-0 run to turn a two-point deficit into a 10-5 advantage. While Medgar Evers closed the gap to one at 10-9, the Gryphons won five of the last seven points to win 15-11 and earn a victory in the teams' rematch.
Siegel finished with a season-high nine kills. Graham-Vannais added three kills while assisting on 19 points.
Hitters
Yolanda Lyne Cando (Arlington, Va./H-B Woodlawn),
Alexis Chapman (Bend, Ore./Bend), and
Clarisse Taboy (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia/George School) each contributed four kills in the match. On defense, Siegel anchored the Gryphons with 10 digs, followed by seven from Graham-Vannais and another six by Taboy.
Sarah Lawrence takes some time off before returning to action on Friday when the Gryphons host Rutgers-Newark at Campbell Sports Center at 7 p.m.
