BRONX, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's cross country opened up the season at the 2014 Baruch College Invitational at Van Courtlandt Park on Sunday. The Gryphons beat out three local squads to take 10th place in the team standings.
Making his collegiate debut, rookie
Daniel Higinbotham (Alpharetta, Ga./Homeschooled) cracked the top 20 in a field of over 80 runners. He crossed the line in 18th place with a time of 31:07 on the 8K (4.97 mile) course.
Returning sophomore
Pat Newsom (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) placed 35th overall. His time of 33:48 was nearly two minutes faster than his previous run on the Van Courtlandt trail in 2013. Sophomore
Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) completed the race in 37:57, two and a half minutes faster than his opening race of the 2013 season.
Sophomore
Jacob Zhu (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Jianping) posted a time of 40:56, three minutes faster than his VCP best, while rookie Jules Christenson completed his first collegiate race in 42:52.
Head Coach
Erin Pomykala was pleased with her team's first race of the year. "On a day made for racing, both the men and women fought through the hills of Van Courtlandt. I am really proud of the hard work that the teams put out on the course today… Our team never quit. We look forward to getting stronger together and to running in our next race."
Up next, Sarah Lawrence cross country travels to the Keystone State for the Mule/Falcon Invitational, hosted by Muhlenberg College and Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa., on Saturday.
