THROGGS NECK, N.Y.-Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming earned third place at the midpoint of the 2015 Skyline Swimming Championships, hosted by Maritime College at Riesenberg Aquatics Center on Friday. Action concludes on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
PEAL WINS BACKSTROKE, SETS SLC 1000 RECORDGryphon
Devon Peal (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) was victorious in the 100 yard backstroke. The rookie posted a personal-best of 1:02.99, winning the event by 1.46 seconds. Peal's mark missed the Skyline Championship record of 1:02.50 by less than half a second. In her other individual swim, Peal completed the 1000 freestyle in 11:33.59. Her effort earned second-place and broke her own SLC record in the event by 16 seconds.
SCORING RECAPPeal swam the lead-off leg of the Green and White 200 yard medley relay, teaming with
Hannah Lawson (Portland, Ore./Pacific Crest Community School),
Sam Amberchan (Alameda, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and
Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett). The Gryphon quartet combined to complete the relay in 1:59.19, earning second place.
In her first individual swim, Lawson captured third place in the 200 freestyle, stopping the clock at 2:05.21. Sophomore
Sarah Schnapp (Taiwan/Tzu Chi) took 11th place and scored two points with a personal-best time of 2:22.31.
Behind Peal's win in the 100 backstroke, three other Gryphons earned points for their performance in the event. Risica captured sixth place with a season-best time of 1:07.89. Amberchan followed with a career-best swim of 1:08.66, earning seventh place. Sophomore
Elizabeth Kroll (Sacramento, Calif./The Met Sacramento) made it three straight Gryphons with an eighth-place effort of 1:09.40, also a career best.
Lawson broke through with a runner-up swim in the 100 breaststroke. The sophomore swam to second place with a time of 1:10.24, banking 13 team points for the Green and White. Sophomore
Rachel Barkowitz (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) stopped the clock at 1:25.68, earning sixth place in the event.
Amberchan broke into the top three of the 200 butterfly. The senior earned third place in a career-best of 2:33.94. Junior
Lydia Mullan (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) placed 11th in the event, posting a career-best time of 3:04.19.
In the day's final race, Risica swam to sixth place in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 27.38 seconds. Kroll earned points with an 11th-place effort, taking a quarter of a second off her personal best with a swim of 28.36.
OTHER NOTABLE SWIMSMullan set a new career best in the 100 yard backstroke, bettering her time by 0.73 second with a swim of 1:18.72. Schnapp swam a career-best in the same event, touching the wall in 1:19.02. Rookie
Kiki Michaan (New York, N.Y./Saint Ann's School) set a personal best in the race with a swim of 1:42.00. Junior
Sky Mihaylo (Albany, Ore./West Albany) took 10 seconds off her season-best in the 200 freestyle, posting a time of 2:47.11.
DAY ONE STANDINGSThrough seven of 14 events, SLC scored 137 team points. Mount Saint Mary College leads the field with 243 points. Purchase College has a narrow edge for second place, totaling 138 points. Behind the Gryphons, St. Joseph's College (L.I.) scored 68 points, followed by host Maritime (65). St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) scored 34 points, while College of Mount Saint Vincent (26) and SUNY College at Old Westbury (13) rounded out the field.
