Nguyen Strikes Out Nine, Gryphons Split Twinbill with Saint Joseph

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Sarah Lawrence softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday with Saint Joseph at Central Connecticut State University's softball field. The Gryphons won the opening game, 6-3, but dropped the nightcap by an 11-3 margin.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMERS
Hannah Akin finished the day 4-for-5 (.800) with two doubles, four RBIs and one run scored. Tiffany McBrayer went 4-for-8 (.500) with three runs scored, while Delaney Parker, Mikayla Cunningham and Karissa McAuley all notched two hits apiece.

In addition to Akin, McAuley, Parker, Mackenzie Mindish and Rebecca Roberts each drove in a run on the day.

Bailey Nguyen had a solid outing in the circle for her second win of the season, tossing a complete game while striking out nine batters.

Sarah Lawrence scored one run in the opening inning of play. McBrayer led off the frame with a single and later rounded the bases after a double from Akin.

The Gryphons plated another run in the third inning, thanks to a two-out double down the left field line from McAuley to score Akin. Mindish drove in another run in the fifth inning on a groundout.

Saint Joseph, who entered the day on a three-game winning streak, rallied in the seventh with three runs to force extra innings.

Sarah Lawrence answered in the eighth with three runs to secure the victory. Parker drove in two runs on a double to left field, and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Roberts.

The Blue Jays got the bats going in the second game, combining to score eight runs through the first three innings of the contest.

Sarah Lawrence cut into the deficit with a three-run fourth inning, as Akin drove in all three runs on a bases-clearing double to left center.

Saint Joseph countered with three runs in the fifth inning to clinch the series split.
