Men's and Women's Swimming 2023-2024 Season Recap

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence swimming teams wrapped up another successful season, with the women's team totaling a dozen top-six individual finishes at the Skyline championships while Patrick Rau of the men's team finished in the top five twice at the same event.

The Gryphons had a very strong season on the women's side, finishing the regular season with an 11-3 overall record and setting some impressive season-bests along the way. Keilani Talma built off a tremendous rookie-of-the-year campaign as a first-year by setting many of SLC's season-best marks, including a a 26-second finish in the 50 freestyle, a time of 59.95 in the 100 butterfly and a mark of 58.68 in the 100 freestyle. Josie Laur joined Talma with the program's only other sub-1-minute 100 freestyle finish, in addition to a pair of impressive 27.23 finishes in the 50 freestyle. Genevieve Chiappetta wrapped up her impressive SLC career with a season-best one-minute mark in the 100 freestyle on senior day before an impressive 5:42.34 mark in the Metropolitan championship, her season-best finish in the event. She also led the team in the backstroke this season, setting season-bests in both the 100 and 200 at the aforementioned Metros event. Sophomore Ella Hernan had an excellent all-around season, holding two of the team's top-five marks in the 50 freestyle, the top time in the 50 backstroke, two of the top three finishes in the 100 backstroke, three of the top five in the 200 backstroke and the top two times in the 200 IM. First-years Hannah Drum, Sonjia Armitage, Linda Kelly and Juliet DeLap were also impactful contributors, with Drum ranking in multiple top-finish lists for the program, including the top time in the 50 butterfly and the second-best mark in the 50 freestyle. At the Skyline championships, the team had a plethora of solid contributors and top finishes, with 12 top-six finishes amongst their swimmers. Talma and Chiappetta both earned second-team all-conference recognition at the event, with Talma finishing second in the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly and Chiappetta doing so in the 200 backstroke. The Sarah Lawrence 200 freestyle relay team was also a top finisher at the event, touching the wall just one second after St. Joseph's Long Island's second-place squad. Chiappetta, Hernan, Talma and Drum earned SLC another top-five finish in the 200 medley relay, finishing in fourth place and less than a second out of third. The final relay event of the day would see the same four swimmers touch the wall with the second-best time, narrowly edging out the team from SJLI. 

The team performed well in the Metropolitan championships as well, with six swimmers making finals appearances in all of their events and two swimmers making the finals in two of their three events. 10 of the team's 11 participants scored and as a whole, they tallied an impressive 24 finals appearances throughout 33 swims. Five relay teams swam throughout the event, with four earning top-eight finishes including the 400 freestyle relay that earned a fourth-place finish. To highlight her amazing career and contributions to the SLC swim program, Chiappetta was deservingly awarded the Dick Krempecki Outstanding Senior Award. The award is voted on by coaches to honor a senior who has made an impact via leadership, performance and service throughout their career.

On the men's team, Patrick Rau had a standout season, capping it off with three finals appearances in his three swims at Metros. He placed ninth in the 1650 freestyle while leading the team to a top-ten finish at the event. In the Skyline championships, the sophomore finished in the top ten in all of his swims, including two top-five finishes. Rau took home fifth place in the 1000 freestyle before an impressive 2:17.59 in the 200 butterfly that placed him nearly ten seconds ahead of the next finisher. In his first season with the Gryphons, Rau stood out with impressive finishes and multiple finals appearances in each of SLC's postseason events.
