Men's Swimming Smashes Seven Records at MSMC

Meet Results

NEWBURGH, N.Y.—
Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming fell to Mount Saint Mary College, 129-60, on the road at Kaplan Recreation Center on Saturday. Despite the loss, the meet marked an impressive day for the Gryphons, who broke seven team records.

Combined with the women's team, Sarah Lawrence broke 12 program records on the day.

"Both teams really did a nice job today," remarked Head Coach Eric Mitchell. "Twelve school records in one meet is pretty remarkable. I put a few people in some new events for them and they stepped up and had great swims."

First-year swimmer Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas, Aledo) earned the first victory of the day for Sarah Lawrence (1-2) by winning the 200 yard freestyle. His swim of 1:52.99 was 7.5 seconds faster than the rest of the field and just under 30 seconds better than the Gryphons' previous best of 2:22.09.

Martinez went on to win the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:00.64, becoming the first Sarah Lawrence swimmer to record an official time in the event.

In the day's final event, Martinez added his name to the record board two more times. He swam 51.20 in the opening leg of the 400 yard freestyle to better the program record in the 100 free by five seconds.

Classmates Cameron Rudd (Portland, Ore.), Paul Latislaw (Van Nuys, Calif., CHAMPS Charter) and Andrew Woodward rounded out the rookie relay squad that finished in 3:59.00, earning a spot on the record board by a margin of over 28 seconds.

On his own, Woodward picked up two additional records. He set the school record in the 400 individual medley (5:43.15) and went on to break the mark in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:59.72. If not for Woodward, sophomore Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India, Inventure Academy) would also have broken his own school record with his swim on Saturday.

In the 1,000 yard freestyle, Latislaw set a program best of 14:53.58, improving the team record by 1:10.

In the head-to-head standings, Mount Saint Mary (2-1) provided a formidable challenge, winning nine of the 11 scored races.

After Thanksgiving break, Sarah Lawrence is back in action at the three-day Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University, Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
