MADISON, N.J.—The Gryphons picked up a dozen new program bests, as Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming took third place at the 2012 Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University from Friday through Sunday.
Four Sarah Lawrence swimmers—three rookies and a sophomore—rewrote Gryphon history by setting 12 program records out of the 19 events for which records exist. The Green and White scored 154 points in the three-day meet that featured competition from the host Rangers and Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham.
On day one of the meet, rookie
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas, Aledo) won the 50 yard freestyle in a brisk 23.25 seconds, setting Sarah Lawrence and Ranger Invitational records in the process.
Martinez also joined
Paul Latislaw (Van Nuys, Calif., CHAMPS Charter),
Eben Woodward (Los Angeles, Calif., Notre Dame) and
Cameron Rudd (Portland, Ore.) in the 400 yard medley relay, setting a new Sarah Lawrence record with their third place swim of 4:38.04.
Saturday saw sophomore Woodward break his own school record in the 400 yard individual medley by touching the wall in 5:28.74.
In back-to-back events, Martinez set another pair of Gryphon and Ranger Invitational records. He came away as the champion in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 51.67 and set a new best of 1:49.28 in the 200 yard freestyle.
Rudd added his first Sarah Lawrence individual record of the meet in his preliminary swim of the 100 yard backstroke. His time of 1:16.14 qualified him for the final and helped the first-year swimmer to fifth-place in the event.
Day two came to a close with the foursome of Martinez, Latislaw, Rudd and Woodward setting the Gryphon record in the 800 yard freestyle relay with a time of 9:07.86. As the lead-off swimmer, Martinez bettered his previous 200 free record with a split of 1:47.23.
Sunday's action began with Latislaw setting a Sarah Lawrence record in the 1650 yard freestyle. The rookie picked up his individual record with a time of 24:43.64.
The next event saw Rudd clock in at 2:43.18 in the 200 yard backstroke, clinching the rookie's supremacy of both school records in the discipline.
Martinez secured his final individual record of the meet by winning the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 1:54.79.
The fierce foursome concluded the invitational by breaking its own record in the 400 yard freestyle relay, stopping the clock at 3:57.62. Martinez led the relay with a record-breaking split of 50.27 in his 100 free leg.
Only two Sarah Lawrence records—
Doug Rubenstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton)'s mark in the 500 freestyle and Julian Sharifi's swim in the 100 breaststroke—remain unbroken by one the four swimmers.
Sarah Lawrence takes a brief rest from competition to prepare for its next meet, a dual against William Paterson University set for Wed., Dec. 12, at 7 p.m.
