Men’s Swimming Finishes Second at SLC Carnival

Meet Results

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In the team's first home meet of the season, Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming placed second out of three teams at the 2013 SLC Sprint Carnival at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday. The Gryphons' runner-up performance included two program record swims.

SLC started off hot, setting a new team record in the meet's first event. The 200 yard medley relay foursome of Cameron Rudd (Portland, Ore./Portland Community College), Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)), Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) and Doug Rubenstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton) won the event in 1:51.89, surpassing their own record time in the event by nearly two seconds.

In the next race, Chu returned to earn his second win of the day, touching the wall first in the 200 yard individual medley with a swim of 2:16.98. Rubenstein followed with a runner-up swim in the 100 yard freestyle (57.74).

Martinez picked up the team's next win, taking the lead in the 100 yard butterfly with a performance of 53.52, more than 12 seconds faster than the rest of the field. The sophomore later picked up wins in the 200 yard freestyle (1:51.31) and 50 yard butterfly (26.20).

Chu won the 50 yard freestyle with a sprint of 23.65 seconds, and Michael Turadek (Bronx, N.Y./HS for Environmental Studies) added critical points with a second-place swim in the 100 yard backstroke (1:17.27).

In the penultimate event, Chu broke the team's second record of the day, eclipsing one of the oldest times on the board. The rookie swam a time of 1:09.41, marking a six-second improvement over Julian Sharifi's previous record set in 2011.

The day ended with a second-place 200 yard freestyle relay swim by Chu, Martinez, Rubenstein and Rudd. Despite taking an early lead, the Green and White posted a mark of 1:40.46, a half-second off the winning time.

In the team scoring, Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham took top honors with 223 points. The Gryphons totaled 207 points, while Brooklyn College rounded out the field with 151 points.

Sarah Lawrence will swim in its home pool again on each of the next two Saturdays. On November 9, the Gryphons host College of Mount Saint Vincent and SUNY Cobleskill, and the team's home finale is November 16 with a meet against Mount Saint Mary College and Brooklyn College.
