OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.—Though two SLC distance records were broken, Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming was ousted by SUNY College at Old Wesbury (2-3), 92-78, at Clark Athletic Center on Thursday.
For Sarah Lawrence (3-2), rookie
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)) and sophomore
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) both earned new places on the College record board, breaking marks in the 1000 yard freestyle and 500 freestyle, respectively.
As the first Gryphons in the pool, Chu and junior
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) teamed to take first and second place in the 1000. In the first half of his race, Chu surpassed the program's 500 yard freestyle record by a 30-second margin, splitting 5:40.41; the first-year swimmer eased off the pace but still clocked in at 11:43.69 for another team record. Warkus touched the wall in 14:56.02 for second place.
The next event saw another Gryphon sweep, as Martinez (1:59.69) and rookie
Jericho Walker-Roberts (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) (2:10.39) captured first and second place in the 200 yard freestyle.
Senior
Doug Rubenstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton) took second place in the 50 free (25.35), while Warkus picked up a team point with fifth place in the event (29.42).
Martinez earned his second win with a time of 55.94 in the 100 yard butterfly. The 100 yard freestyle featured Chu's second win of the day (50.32), while Rubenstein placed fourth (57.46).
Making his collegiate debut in the 500 yard freestyle, Martinez took 26 seconds off Chu's record set 30 minutes earlier, re-breaking the SLC record in 5:13.97. Rubenstein, the team record holder at the start of the season, took third in the event at 6:29.05.
Other notable finishes included Chu's runner-up swim in the 200 individual medley (2:15.95), as well as second and third-place 100 backstroke swims by Walker-Roberts (1:12.59) and Warkus (1:18.49). Walker-Roberts also placed in the 100 breaststroke with a runner-up swim of 1:13.81.
Sarah Lawrence returns to action on Saturday with a double-dual meet at Bard College. The Gryphons will face Purchase College and host Raptors for a 1 p.m. meet. Inclement weather is forecasted—meet changes will be announced on GoGryphons.com and
