Women's Final Recap
MADISON, N.J.—The Gryphons broke five team records on the final day of competition, as Sarah Lawrence College men's took third place at the 2013 Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University at F.M. Kirby Pool, December 6-8.
With five program bests on the day, the Gryphons concluded the weekend with a total of 12 revisions to the team record board. SLC concluded the event with 165 points, while Drew (255 points) narrowly edged Fairleigh Dickinson Florham (253) for the team title.
SLC's
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) was the first Gryphon in the pool, having qualified for the final of the 200 yard backstroke with an SLC record of 2:40.99 in the preliminary heats. The junior finished fourth in the event (2:45.06) to earn five points for the team.
In the 100 yard freestyle, rookie
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)) won his third event of the meet, touching the wall in 50.70 seconds. Senior
Doug Rubenstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton) also qualified for the final and took seventh place (56.22). In Sunday morning's preliminary heats, sophomore
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) set a new meet record of 50.02 in the event; he would later opt out of the evening's finals.
Rookies Jericho-Walker Roberts and
Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) secured points for the Gryphons in the final of the 200 yard breaststroke. The duo finished in sixth (2:42.96) and seventh (2:56.68), respectively. Earlier in the day, Chu broke the SLC record in the event, swimming 2:28.21 in his preliminary heat.
Martinez's energy-saving strategy paid off in the 200 yard butterfly. He picked up his third individual title with a performance of 1:52.30, setting an SLC and Ranger Invitational record in the process.
The Gryphons concluded the day with the 400 yard freestyle relay. Martinez broke an SLC record with a 100 free split of 48.20 to start the race. His efforts helped teammates Rubenstein, Walker-Roberts and Chu complete the relay in 3:31.47 to set a new SLC record as well as a Ranger Invitational best.
Warkus, Ransom,
Luc Mitchell (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and
Owen Marks (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) rounded out the team scoring with a fifth-place finish in the relay.
Sarah Lawrence swimming concludes the semester with two meets this week. The Gryphons will travel to The College at Old Westbury on Thursday, and they will face Purchase College at Bard College on Saturday.
