Three Records Fall in First Day at UNYSCSA Champs

Sarah Lawrence College women's and men's swimmers broke three school records on the first day of the 2013 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association championship on Wednesday. In addition, sophomore Ariana Peschke (Topanga, Calif., La Reina) made an appearance on the podium with an eighth place finish in the 50 yard freestyle.

In the first event of the four-day meet, sophomore Gryphon Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J., Morristown) broke the program record in the 500 yard freestyle, swimming a time of 5:54.81 to become the first Sarah Lawrence swimmer to break the six-minute barrier.

Rookie Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas, Aledo) broke his own record in the 200 yard individual medley with a mark of 1:57.57, qualifying for the consolation final as the 16th seed. In the evening session, he improved his time by nearly two seconds, touching the wall in 1:55.84 to earn 10th place in the event.

In the morning session, Peschke set a personal best in the 50 yard freestyle, swimming a 24.39 in the race to finish sixth after the heats. In the championship final, she posted a 24.63, slipping back to eighth place but earning 22 team points for the Gryphons.

The men's 200 yard medley relay of Michael Turadek (Bronx, N.Y., HS for Environmental Studies), Martinez, Ned Bandera-Duplantier (Houston, Texas, Westfield) and Owen Marks (Pittsfield, Mass., Pittsfield) earned 14th place with a swim of 2:03.90. The Gryphon men stand in 10th place of 14 teams after day one of swimming.

On the women's side, the 200 yard medley relay squad of Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif., Menlo-Atherton), Alayna Bone (Mercer Island, Wash., Mercer Island), Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif., Menlo-Atherton) and Addie Sun (Plano, Texas, Plano) finished in 15th place with an effort of 2:15.81. The Sarah Lawrence women stand in 13th place of 15 teams after the first day of competition.

Racing at the 2013 UNYSCSA championship continues through Saturday with morning sessions beginning at 10 a.m. and evening finals at 6 p.m. each day. Live results can be followed at tpmlphelps.com.
