ITHACA, N.Y.—After the Gryphons broke three school records in Wednesday's action, Sarah Lawrence College men's and women's swimming bested five more records on day two of competition at the 2013 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships on Thursday.
In the preliminary session, Sarah Lawrence rookie
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas, Aledo) beat his own school record in the 100 yard butterfly with a mark of 51.09 seconds. His time was fifth-best in a field of over 40 swimmers and qualified him to compete in the championship heat. In the evening's final, Martinez nearly duplicated his effort with a swim of 51.10, securing a podium spot in sixth place.
Cameron Rudd (Portland, Ore.), Martinez,
Ned Bandera-Duplantier (Houston, Texas, Westfield) and
Michael Turadek (Bronx, N.Y., HS for Environmental Studies) teamed up for the 400 yard medley relay and swam a time of 4:33.18 to earn 14th place. Rudd led the event with a 100 yard backstroke time of 1:09.77, besting the Sarah Lawrence record in the event by 2.26 seconds. The Gryphon men slipped to 14th place as a team after day two of competition.
On the women's side,
Ariana Peschke (Topanga, Calif., La Reina),
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J., Morristown),
Natasha Leonard (Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i, Kealakehe) and
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J., Mountain Lakes) broke the second-oldest time on the Green and White record board. The foursome swam the 200 yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:51.83, breaking the decade-old mark of 1:53.05 set in 2003. The same squad lowered the mark further with a performance of 1:50.38 in the evening session to clinch 15th place.
The 400 yard medley relay saw Peschke, Pulitano,
Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif., Menlo-Atherton) and Bates break the Sarah Lawrence record set in October with a time of 4:32.97. The same race also featured an opening 100 backstroke split of 57.39 by Peschke, breaking her own school record. If the Gryphons were eligible for the NCAA national championship, her time would have been a provisional qualifying mark. Thursday evening saw the relay team post an even-faster mark of 4:28.50 for 15th place overall.
The Sarah Lawrence women remained in 13th place at the midpoint of the four-day meet.
Action at the 2013 UNYSCSA Championships continues through Saturday with preliminary sessions beginning at 10 a.m. and final sessions at 6 p.m. each day.
