ITHACA, N.Y.—On day three of the 2013 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association championship, Sarah Lawrence College swimmers
Ariana Peschke (Topanga, Calif., La Reina) and
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas, Aledo) continued to shine in their events on Friday.
Swimming the 100 backstroke, Peschke posted a preliminary time of 57.41, nearly a full second better than the NCAA national championship provisional qualifying time. She entered the championship heat as the second seed, and in Friday evening's championship final, she improved upon her school record by touching the wall in a second-place time of 57.23.
Martinez showcased his skill in the preliminaries, finishing the 200 yard butterfly in 1:54.24 to set a new Sarah Lawrence record. The rookie entered the championship heat as the No. 5 seed and improved to fourth place with an NCAA provisional mark and team record 1:53.32.
In the 800 yard free relay, Peschke teamed with
Natasha Leonard (Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i, Kealakehe),
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J., Morristown) and
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J., Mountain Lakes) to set a new school record with a time of 8:51.84. Peschke's opening split of 1:57.98 marked a new Gryphon best in the 200 yard freestyle. The foursome earned 14th place in the event, while Sarah Lawrence stands in 13th after day three.
On the men's side, Martinez opened the relay with a program-record 200 yard freestyle swim of 1:45.97. Along with
Ned Bandera-Duplantier (Houston, Texas, Westfield),
Cameron Rudd (Portland, Ore.) and
Michael Turadek (Bronx, N.Y., HS for Environmental Studies), the Green and White set a new 800 yard free relay record of 8:38.30. The Gryphon men gained two spots on Friday and are 12th with one day of competition remaining.
Action at the 2013 UNYSCSA Championships concludes on Saturday with a preliminary session beginning at 10 a.m. and final session at 6 p.m.
