Meet Results

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—First-year swimmer Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas, Aledo) posted two titles and a second-place finish as Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming took fourth place at the Vassar Sprint Invitational Saturday afternoon in Kresge Pool.

Skidmore College triumphed as the team champions followed by SUNY New Paltz, Vassar College, the Gryphons and Bard College. Sarah Lawrence totaled 127 points on the day—47.5 by Martinez.

Martinez captured the invitational championship in the 100 yard butterfly, when he coasted to a finish of 54.70. He led by a half second at the midpoint of the race and stretched the advantage to 2.19 seconds in the second half. The rookie's time in the event broke the invitational meet record.

In the 50 yard butterfly, Martinez was challenged by a tough field, but he out-touched his competition by 0.32 to stop the clock at 25.40 and earn his second victory. The 100 yard individual medley saw Martinez down by half a second at the midpoint, and he was unable to reel in his SUNY New Paltz foe, settling for second place with an effort of 58.12 seconds.

Sophomore Eben Woodward (Los Angeles, Calif., Notre Dame) also had a successful day in the pool. His 100 yard backstroke swim of 1:12.03 earned him sixth place in the event and captured the Gryphons' only school record of the meet. Woodward also tacked on four points for the Green and White with a ninth-place swim of 1:20.54 in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Michael Turadek (Bronx, N.Y., HS for Environmental Studies) scored 15 points for the Gryphons, including eighth-place showings in two individual races. He swam the 500 yard freestyle in a personal-best 6:59.53 before swimming the 50 yard backstroke in 40.76.

Graduate student Ned Bandera-Duplantier (Houston, Texas, Westfield) had an impressive swim in the 50 yard backstroke, finishing in seventh place with a time of 36.61 to add seven points for the Gryphons, while he also broke the one-minute mark in the 100 freestyle. In the 100 yard backstroke, rookie Cameron Rudd (Portland, Ore.) placed seventh with a time of 1:18.51, while Paul Latislaw (Van Nuys, Calif., CHAMPS Charter) followed in eighth place (1:20.96).

Nicolo Filice (Berkeley, Calif., Maybeck) placed in two individual events, taking 11th in the 50 yard backstroke and 12th in the 50 yard butterfly. Senior Alexander Skillman (Katonah, N.Y., John Jay) picked up four points with a ninth-place effort in the 50 yard backstroke, while Owen Marks (Pittsfield, Mass., Pittsfield) rounded out the individual scoring with a 10th-place swim in the same event.

In the 200 yard medley relay, Rudd, Martinez, Woodward and Bandera-Duplantier notched an eighth-place finish for the Gryphons. The day's final event saw Turadek, Latislaw, Marks and Filice finish fifth in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Sarah Lawrence hits the pool for one final event of the 2012-13 season. The Gryphons travel to Ithaca, N.Y., February 20-23, for the 2013 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championship, hosted by Ithaca College.
