NEW YORK—After the opening week of the Gryphons' season, Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis swept the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference awards for the week ending Sept. 8. First-year player Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) was named Player of the Week, while Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) was honored as Rookie of the Week.
Atkinson won each of her first four intercollegiate tennis matches in impressive fashion. Playing at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, she achieved shutouts in both of her matches on Tuesday's 7-2 win over Keystone. On Friday, Atkinson and partner Slade again blanked their No. 3 doubles opponent, while Atkinson moved up to No. 4 singles and picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win to round out the week and secured a crucial two points in a 5-4 triumph over Cooper Union.
Also making her collegiate debut, Slade had a 2-0 week playing at No. 3 doubles. Slade and Atkinson shutout their opponents, 8-0, in both matches of the week.
Sarah Lawrence women's tennis returns to the courts on Saturday when the team heads to face Brooklyn College at 1 p.m.
