Match ResultsBRONXVILLE, N.Y.—After rain washed out the Gryphons' two previous matches, Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis returned to action and defeated Cairn University, 7-2, in a non-conference match at Andrews Courts on Tuesday night.
Before the match, senior
Kayla Pincus (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) was recognized for her dedication and contributions to the SLC women's tennis program. Pincus is a four-year player and won the 2013 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference No. 2 Singles Women's Tennis Championship.
Sarah Lawrence (6-4) was quick to put the first point on the scoreboard. The No. 3 doubles pair of sophomores
Sarah Pyatt (Taos, N.M./Taos) and
Caroline Harrison (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) swept their opponents, 8-0.
At No. 2 doubles, junior
Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) and sophomore
Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) picked up the Gryphons' second point, 8-5. Cairn narrowed the gap by winning the No. 1 doubles match.
With the Gryphons in front, 2-1, sophomore
Moni Spancheska (Skopje, Macedonia/NOVA International) was the first individual on the courts and made quick work of her No. 6 singles match. She blanked her foe in the opening set en route to a 6-0, 6-3 win.
Cairn cut the lead by taking the No. 1 singles match, while the Gryphons held on to a 3-2 advantage.
Atkinson gave the Green and White some breathing room by yielding only three games to take the No. 2 match, 6-2, 6-1, and put the Gryphons one point from team victory.
SLC needed to win one of the remaining three matches on the courts as the No. 3, 4 and 5 duels were underway. After the Gryphons each won their opening sets, victory seemed assured, but the Highlanders were not ready to concede.
In the No. 4 match, Pyatt's opponent leveled the match at one set apiece. Meanwhile, the No. 3 and No. 5 matches saw the respective players still on serve with no clear second-set advantage.
Pyatt squared off against Britta Nelson in a super-tiebreak, and Nelson sprinted out to a 6-1 lead in a race to 10 points. Pyatt remained focused and won five straight points to even the score at 6-6. After the score advanced to 7-7, the tide finally shifted in the Gryphons' direction, and Pyatt won three points in a row to win, 6-2, 2-6, (10-7).
Just minutes after Pyatt clinched the match, first year
Sofia Reh (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) broke serve in the final game of her match at No. 3 singles, winning 6-3, 7-5. Moments later, Slade closed out the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.
With the victory, SLC improves to 5-2 against non-conference opponents this season.
Sarah Lawrence hits the road for a pair of Skyline Conference matches this weekend, starting with a makeup match against St. Joseph's College Long Island on Friday. The Gryphons then head to play Sage Colleges on Saturday
