NEWBURGH, N.Y.—Though the Gryphons touched the wall first in six events and broke three team records, Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming was beat out by Mount Saint Mary College, 110-79, in a Skyline meet at Kaplan Recreation Center on Saturday.
Sarah Lawrence (1-2, 1-1 Skyline) won the majority of the events but could not match the depth of the Mount Saint Mary (3-1, 2-0 Skyline) squad.
MSMC took the lead from the start by winning the 400 yard medley relay. Senior
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes), sophomore
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)), junior
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) and rookie
Albert Riley (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) comprised a four-class squad that nearly rallied from behind but fell short with a second-place time of 4:04.86.
Skyline Rookie of the Week Riley returned to the pool in the next event, swimming to victory in record fashion the 1650 freestyle with a time of 19:13.47. His mark was 3.5 minutes faster than SLC's best set in 2012, previously the oldest record for the young team.
Two-time Skyline Swimmer of the Week Martinez gave the team a second-straight win in the 200 freestyle, posting a time of 1:52.48 for a five-second margin of victory. Senior
Owen Marks (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) added a point to the team score with a fifth-place swim.
The Knights swept the 50 free, leaving rookie
Brendan McAlevy (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) to clean up a pair of fourth-place points. In the next race, Pulitano helped the team with a third-place swim in the 400 individual medley.
In the 200 butterfly, Martinez (1:56.97) regained the winning momentum by beating out the field by nearly 20 seconds.
Chu followed with a two-second win in the 100 free, stopping the clock at 49.87. Sophomore
Amit Sankaran (San Francisco, Calif./Mallya Aditi International) scored a point for fifth place.
Though he was third in the 200 backstroke, Pulitano earned his first record of the season with a time of 2:36.85. Sophomore
Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) clocked in for fourth place.
Riley won his second event of the day in the 500 free. The first-year triumphed by 18.5 seconds with a swim of 5:24.98. Marks took fourth place in the race for two team points.
Chu added the Gryphons' final win of the day, picking up his second victory in the 200 breaststroke. He broke his own SLC record with a swim of 2:25.67, nearly 12 seconds better than his closest opponent. Ransom and McAlevy tallied points for fourth and fifth place.
MSMC iced the victory with a win in the 400 free relay. Marks, McAlevy, Ransom and Sankaran rounded out the SLC scoring with second place in the race.
Sarah Lawrence returns home to host Maritime College on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m.
