Men's Swimming Competes at Vassar Invitational

Meet Results

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—
Racing in the team's final regular-season meet, Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming took fifth place at the Vassar College Spring Invitational at Kresge Pool on Sunday.

In an improbably close finish, Skidmore College (426 points) won the team title, followed by the host Brewers (425) and SUNY New Paltz (424). SUNY Cobleskill (115.5), Sarah Lawrence (104.5) and Bard College (43) rounded out the field.

In the day's first event, rookie Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)), sophomore Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo), senior Doug Rubenstein (Los Angeles, Calif./Hamilton) and first year Jericho Walker-Roberts (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) posted an eighth-place swim in the 200 yard medley relay (1:53.75).

Martinez finished among the top two in all three of his individual events, each race featuring a duel against Vassar rookie Anthony Walker. In the 100 yard butterfly, Martinez looked to defend his meet-record win at the 2013 meet. Though he improved his time from last year, Martinez's swim of 53.39 seconds came up just short to Walker's 52.90.

The pair squared off again in the 50 yard butterfly, and again both swimmers surpassed the event's previous meet record. While Martinez swam a personal-best 24.35, Walker touched the wall first in 23.86.

Martinez finally bettered his rival in the 100 yard individual medley. Walker led early in the race, but the Gryphon crawled back and eventually surpassed his foe by a tenth of a second, stopping the clock at 57.06 for the event victory.

Chu also placed in all three of his individual events. Following his relay swim, he picked up sixth-place points in the 50 yard freestyle (23.31). He also went on to capture seventh place in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:09.21).

As the top-seed in the 100 yard freestyle, the rookie Gryphon faced tough competition, and though he surpassed his projected time, Chu's effort of 50.64 seconds was relegated to second place by a heartbreaking margin of 0.03 second.

Junior Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i/Parker School) picked up 10th place in the 500 yard freestyle, setting a personal-best by 28 seconds with a time of 6:51.44. He also scored points with a ninth-place performance in the 50 yard backstroke (35.09).

Walker-Roberts placed in a pair of individual swims. After taking 11th in the 50 yard breaststroke (36.19), he finished 11th in the 100 breaststroke (1:18.33).

Sophomore Michael Turadek (Bronx, N.Y./HS for Environmental Studies) earned a handful of points for the Gryphons by completing the 50 yard backstroke in 35.01 seconds, good for eighth place in the event.

Junior Owen Marks (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) notched a point with his 12th-place swim in the 200 yard freestyle (2:29.46), and Rubenstein rounded out the individual scoring by tying for 12th place in the 50 yard butterfly (28.34).

In the day's final event, Warkus, Marks, rookie Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) and Turadek teamed to earn 10th place in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.91).

Sarah Lawrence concludes the 2013-14 campaign at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships, Feb. 19-22, hosted by Ithaca College.
