Box Score VALHALLA, N.Y.—With less than two minutes remaining in the final period, Sarah Lawrence College was dismissed by non-conference opponent New Jersey City University, 1-0, in a double overtime game at Vikings Stadium on Wednesday.
Sarah Lawrence (2-2) notched its first shot in the ninth minute, when senior
Kaylen Dornan (San Diego, Calif./High Tech High International) had her attempt blocked by keeper Brittany Hoffman. For NJCU (3-1-1), the Gothic Knight defense silenced the Gryphons for the remainder of the first half, limiting SLC to one shot in the stanza.
At the other end of the field, starting keeper
Addie Rosenberg (New York, N.Y./Fusion Academy) stopped all five shots fired on goal, including several from close range. With both defenses in full force, the teams went to halftime scoreless.
In the second half, NJCU was able to pull the trigger 11 more times with four shots on goal. Rookie goalkeeper
Noelle Clark (Yonkers, N.Y./The Calhoun School) entered the game following the intermission and stopped each of the Gothic Knights' attempts.
SLC senior
Elle Blanchet (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) notched a shot on goal in the 51st minute but was stonewalled by Hoffman. In the 60th minute, sophomore
Sadie Rose Zavgren (Wilton, N.H./Homeschooled) drove down the right side and fired a crossing shot that also found the goalie's hands.
The 64th minute saw NJCU break down the field, leading to a one-touch shot by Laura Bustamante. Clark made the save of the day with a swat that deflected the ball just wide of the net. With just under six minutes to go, NJCU's Alicia Umanzor nearly struck gold, but her shot hit the iron of the left post, preserving the double shutout.
After 90 minutes of back-and-forth play, the regulation timer expired on a 0-0 deadlock.
The first ten-minute overtime saw both keepers make an additional save, stymieing the offenses once again.
On the back line, SLC's Zavgren teamed with
Shannon Sullivan (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional),
Clarke Powell (Snellville, Ga./Shiloh) and
Tori Davis (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood) to keep the game scoreless through 118 minutes of action.
With 1:58 left on the clock, the silence was finally broken when Hoffman fired a clearing kick over the Gryphon defense. Amanda Filippone won the foot race and eluded Clark to seal the 1-0 win for the Gothic Knights. NJCU goalie Brittany Hoffman notched her third career goal while playing as keeper.
