ALLENTOWN, Pa.—In a pair of road matches, Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis split its weekend, falling to PSU Abington on Saturday, 5-4, before edging Cedar Crest College by the same margin on Sunday.
Sarah Lawrence (2-3) squared off against Abington (4-0) on Saturday, stumbling by the closest of margins. The Nittany Lions took two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead. SLC's No. 3 sophomores
Sarah Pyatt (Taos, N.M./Taos) and
Caroline Harrison (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) secured their match, 8-4, to put SLC on the scoreboard.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomores
Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) and
Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) saw their winning streak snapped, 8-3. The pair had never previously lost a match together, stringing together 18 wins dating back to the start of the 2013 season.
In singles play, SLC needed to win four of six matches but came up short. Rookie
Sofia Reh (Villanova, Pa./Radnor) came out on top in straight sets in the No. 3 match. Slade also won in straight sets, winning a nail-biter tiebreaker in the latter set of the No. 5 match.
At No. 2 singles, Atkinson won a three-set thriller, blanking her opponent, 6-0, in the third.
On Sunday, Cedar Crest (2-4) again put SLC at a 2-1 disadvantage after doubles play. This time, Atkinson and Slade picked up a victory, 8-2. The Gryphons' No. 3's Pyatt and Harrison fought to a 7-7 tie but were eventually overcome, 9-7.
Harrison took the No. 6 singles match without yielding a game, 6-0, 6-0, tying the team score at 2-2.
Atkinson won in straight sets at No. 2 singles, and Pyatt gave the Gryphons their fourth point in No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-3.
In the final match on the courts, senior
Kayla Pincus (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) squared off in the No. 1 match to determine which team would come out on top. After falling behind, Pincus won the second set to take the match to a decisive third. In the end, she secured the win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, to lift the Green and White to the 5-4 win.
On Thursday, Sarah Lawrence College travels to Mount Saint Mary College (N.Y.) for a Skyline Conference match at 6 p.m
