BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Sophomore
Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)) claimed his fourth individual school record, as Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming was defeated by College of Staten Island, 108-68, in a non-conference meet at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday.
Sarah Lawrence (2-5) won four events on the day. After trailing by as many as 16 points, SLC got back into the mix following Chu's record breaking swim in the 200 backstroke. The sophomore posted the team's fastest-ever time in the event, 2:17.12, to pull the Gryphons back within eight points with three events remaining. In the end, Staten Island (6-3) won the final events en route to the win.
Sarah Lawrence took an early lead by winning the day's opening race. Chu,
Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes),
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) and
Brendan McAlevy (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) won the 400 medley relay with a mark of 4:18.56.
Martinez fought through a close race in the 200 freestyle and fell to second place (1:48.03) by a margin of half a second. Senior
Owen Marks (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) posted a career best of 2:18.41 in his final meet in his home pool.
Chu picked up his first individual win of the day in the 50 free, touching the wall in 23.29 seconds. McAlevy placed third, while sophomore
Amit Sankaran (San Francisco, Calif./Mallya Aditi International) swam a personal best of 30.20.
Pulitano posted a runner-up swim in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:41.29. Sophomore
Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) made his season debut in the event with a fourth-place swim.
Martinez avenged his earlier loss by beating his rival by 4.6 seconds to win the 200 yard butterfly (1:57.30), rounding out the Gryphons' victories.
Marks placed second in the 100 free with a career-best 1:00.88, while senior
Michael Turadek (Bronx, N.Y./HS for Environmental Studies) placed fourth and Sankaran added a team point in fifth place.
McAlevy added points for third place behind Chu in the 200 backstroke, while Pulitano and Ransom placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 200 breaststroke.
Sarah Lawrence competes in its final dual meet next Saturday, when the Gryphons will take on Old Westbury in the pool of The College of New Rochelle. SLC then completes the season with the Skyline Championships, Jan. 30-31, and UNYSCSA Championships, Feb. 18-21.
