Women's Cross Country Competes at Knight Invite

Race Results

MILTON, N.Y.-
Sarah Lawrence College women's cross country took 12th at the Mount Saint Mary College Knight Invite at Hudson Valley Sportsdome on Saturday.

IN SHORT
SLC finish: 12th - 301 points
Race distance: 5,000 meters
Total teams: 19
Total runners: 154
Winning team: St. Joseph's College Long Island - 33 points

CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
Saturday's race was run on the same 5K course that the Skyline will use for the conference championship on October 25. In addition to meet victor St. Joseph's, Saturday's field included Mount Saint Mary (eighth), Sage (ninth), Farmingdale State (13th), Maritime (15th) and Purchase (16th). Mount Saint Vincent was also present but did not field a full team.

TAKING IT EASY
Following heavy rain throughout the week, the soggy course provided tricky conditions. Rather than risk injury on unsure footing, Head Coach Erin Pomykala directed her team to take it easy. "We didn't worry about our times today since the conditions were rough and a few of our runners have lingering injuries. Today's race gave the team a chance to learn the course in preparation for the championship."

GRYPHON LEADERS
With a 14th place finish, Mary Kauffman (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) saw the end to a streak of seven-straight top-10 finishes. She crossed the line in 22:02. Sophomore Tiffany Meier (Goleta, Calif./Olive Grove Charter) placed as the No. 2 Gryphon in back-to-back weeks, earning 68th in 24:27. Rookie Isabel Edmonds (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton North) reached the finish three seconds behind in 70th place.

CROSSING THE LINE
Rookie Molly Walsh (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) was the next Gryphon to finish, earning 82nd in 25:18. Sophomore Nawshin Abanti (Dhaka, Bangladesh/International School Dhaka) was 116th in 27:10, while first year Katherine Labadie (New Orleans, La./Benjamin Franklin) followed in 117th two seconds later. Junior Allyson Panton (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) rounded out SLC's scorers in 121st (27:41), and Danielle Dyen-Shapiro (Estero, Fla./Cypress Lake) rounded out the lineup in 141st (31:22).

BROKEN STREAK
The meet breaks a streak of five straight invitational meets in which the Gryphons placed among the top five teams.
