MAKING HISTORYIn addition to being SLC's first Skyline win, the victory marks the program's first 3-1 start to a season and first back-to-back victory. Sarah Lawrence has already matched its three wins from each of the team's first two varsity seasons.
FIRST HALFIn the first 45 minutes, the Gryphon offense kept up the pressure but couldn't circumvent the Lady Bears' defense. SLC posted 12 shots and earned seven corner kicks but failed to put the ball in the net. St. Joseph's goalkeeper Samantha Rossi made five saves in the period and 10 in the game.
BREAKING THROUGHThe go-ahead goal finally came in the 53rd minute. Junior
Paige Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge (Univ. of Tampa)) fed a long through ball from the backfield that found rookie
Sophia Spralja (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente). The first-year calmly put the ball away from the top of the penalty box to put Sarah Lawrence in front, 1-0. The goal was Spralja's third of the season.
RULE OF THREEFor more than 20 minutes, the Gryphons were kept from scoring again. Things changed quickly beginning in the 76th minute. Sophomore
Luana DeBorst (Santo Domingo, Costa Rica/European School of Costa Rica) fed a crossing pass to junior defender
Sadie Rose Zavgren (Wilton, N.H./Homeschooled), who found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Just 46 seconds later, DeBorst crossed a pass from the left side and connected with Smith to extend the lead to 3-0.
In another 37 seconds, magic struck again. This time, Spralja fed the ball to rookie
Nora Burrows (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), who fired a bullet from 18 yards to round out the scoring on the day. Burrows finished the game with a season-high nine shots, while DeBorst contributed six shots.
NATIONAL RECOGNITIONSarah Lawrence will enter the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer record book in its first year of full membership. The Gryphons' feat of three consecutive goals in 1:23 ties the eighth-fastest time in the book.
