HELLO AGAINThe last time the programs met was in 2012 at St. Joseph's College Long Island. As there are no seniors on the SLC roster, all the 2015 Gryphons were facing the Beavers for the first time. The two squads played on one earlier occasion, in 1990 at Maritime College. CCNY has now won all three meetings.
FIRST SET SEE-SAWThe opening set included five ties and three lead changes. SLC scored the opening point on a CCNY error, and junior
Yolanda Lyne Cando (Arlington, Va./H-B Woodlawn) landed a kill to tie the set, 3-3. Trailing 5-3, the Gryphons scored the next six points, including a kill and two aces by sophomore rookie
Eleni Spentzouris (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North). Cando recorded her second kill of the set to give the Green and White a 9-5 edge. CCNY responded by winning the next eight points. Sarah Lawrence was held without another offensive point except for a service ace by
CJ Kelley (Las Vegas, Nev./Basic), and the Beavers closed the first set, 25-16.
BACK AND FORTHSarah Lawrence kept CCNY from carrying momentum into the second set. The teams alternated scoring for the first nine points of the frame. After Kelley had her second kill of the match, the Beavers caught fire and scored 10 in a row. A kill by rookie
Seven Green (Akwesasne/Frank Sinatra Sch. of the Arts) broke the streak, but CCNY cruised to a 25-11 set. Spentzouris tallied her third service ace during the set.
RALLY FALLS SHORTAfter kills by Cando and Green, Sarah Lawrence took its first edge, 3-0, early in the third set. CCNY responded by scoring seven of the next eight points to go in front 7-4. Spentzouris added a second kill and a season-high fourth ace, but the Beavers built the lead to five points, 13-8. From there, Kelley earned her second kill of the set along with back-to-back aces. Green pitched in another kill and an ace, as the Green and White went on an 11-2 rally, going in front, 19-15. Despite a team-high fourth kill by Cando, CCNY won 10 of the next 12 points, closing out the match. The 21 points are the most that the Gryphons have scored in a losing set this season.
DEFENSIVE EFFORTRookies
Hanna DeLoe (Stamford, Conn./CGS at Brien McMahon) and
Marie Richter (Chemnitz, Germany/St. Andrew's School) led the Gryphons with five digs apiece. Kelley finished with four digs, and Green had three.
