IN SHORTSarah Lawrence (2-0) def. Valley Forge (0-4), 3-0
Tibbetts Brook Park, Yonkers, N.Y.
QUICK ATTACKRookie
Nora Burrows (Titusville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) scored the first goal of the game and her second game-winner of the young season. In the 17th minute, she collected a crossing pass from sophomore
Luana DeBorst (Santo Domingo, Costa Rica/European School of Costa Rica) and put the ball into the left side of the net to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead. The Green and White had four shots in the first 20 minutes but eased off the gas to protect the advantage; the Gryphons added three more shots in the first period to lead 1-0 at the intermission.
A NEAR MISSIn the 67th minute, a Gryphon penalty yielded a UVF penalty kick. Looking to equalize the score, Rachel Stormes was elected to take the attempt, but her shot drifted just wide of the left post.
PUTTING IT OUT OF REACHIn the 76th minute Burrows served up a perfectly-placed corner kick and found the head of rookie
Sophia Spralja (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente). Spralja deflected the ball perfectly, evading the Patriot keeper, to score her first collegiate goal. Ten minutes later, Burrows intercepted a UVF pass and sent the ball downfield to junior
Shannon Sullivan (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett Regional). Sullivan worked the ball around the last defender and the keeper to give the Gryphons the 3-0 advantage.
ON TARGETRookie
Shira Ungar (Bethesda, Md./Charles E. Smith Jewish Day) had a stellar day, firing five shots with four on-goal. Burrows led the game with six shots, keeping four between the pipes, while DeBorst added three shots.
STRONG BACK LINEThe shutout victory was not without help from
Sadie Rose Zavgren (Wilton, N.H./Homeschooled),
Clarke Powell (Snellville, Ga./Shiloh) and
Grace Euphrat Weston (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco Univ. HS), who all played a full 90 minutes.
MIND THE NETSLC goalkeeper
Addie Rosenberg (New York, N.Y./Fusion Academy) earned back-to-back wins for the first time in her career. The junior stopped three shots in Monday's win. For UVF, Makenzi Maun had 11 saves for the evening.
PATRIOT MISSILESValley Forge did not record many shots, but the Patriots had two threatening attacks, one near the end of each half. In the first half, Olivia Strohm fired a shot nearly found the net. In the second half, Karalyn Vilcko and Strohm took control at midfield and worked the ball into the Gryphon penalty area before Strohm's eventual shot found the waiting arms of Rosenberg.
RACKING UP THE POINTSBurrows adds to her one-goal, one-assist performance against Saint Elizabeth, cumulating two goals and three assists for seven points in her first two collegiate games. That puts her fifth on the all-time career leaderboard trailing three active players DeBorst (11 points),
Sadie Rose Zavgren (Wilton, N.H./Homeschooled) (11) and Sullivan (10).
THAT'S ME IN THE CORNERSarah Lawrence racked up 12 corner kicks, including nine in the first half. That ties a program record set against Yeshiva in the team's opener last season.
UP NEXTThe Gryphons will face a tough Skyline opponent in St. Joseph's College Long Island. Sarah Lawrence travels to Patchogue to face the Golden Eagles on Saturday.
