Box Score YONKERS, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer concluded the 2016 season in dramatic fashion, falling to The Sage Colleges, 1-0, in an overtime thriller at Tibbetts Brook Park on Tuesday. By virtue of holding Sage to a one-goal victory, Sarah Lawrence knocked their rivals from the No. 2 to No. 4 seed in the upcoming Skyline tournament, costing the Gators a first-round bye.
IN SHORT
Sage (11-7, 7-2 Skyline) def. Sarah Lawrence (5-10, 2-7 Skyline), 1-0 [ot].
KEY MOMENTS
Sage controlled the flow of the game from start to finish, but Sarah Lawrence played as a team and fought off attack after attack. The Gators recorded 15 shots in the opening half, putting little more than half on-target. Senior
Paige Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) recorded the Gryphons' only shot of the half, and after a hard-fought period, the teams went to halftime without a score. Rookie keeper
Rachell Mosquera (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia) made eight saves in the period, half of her total 16 saves in the game.
Smith fired the first shot of the second half. Sophomore
Sophia Spralja (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) also struck a shot in the 63rd minute. The Gryphon defense fended off another 11 shots by the Gators. Defenders
Emily Pressley (Columbia, Mo./Hickman),
Clarke Powell (Snellville, Ga./Shiloh),
Madison Rosandich (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) and anchor
Eva Horstman (Edina, Minn./Edina) successfully preserved the 90-minute shutout and sent the game into overtime, tied 0-0 after regulation.
Without any reserves for relief, the Gryphons defended three early shots by the Gators. In the end, a foul close to the goal earned Sage a penalty kick, and the visitors finally closed out the game with a successful strike.
BITING THE GATORS
Sage began the game with a chance to finish as high as the Skyline No. 2 seed and capture a quarterfinal-round bye in the upcoming championship tournament. The Gators ended the season with a 7-2 Skyline record, matching Mount Saint Vincent and Mount Saint Mary. Separating the three teams came down to the fifth tiebreaker: goal differential. If the Gators had beaten Sarah Lawrence by two goals on Tuesday, Sage would have emerged as the tiebreaker victor. Instead, the Gryphons kept the differential to one goal, relegating Sage to the bottom of the pile and No. 4 seed overall.

Jordynn Figueroa (Gresham, Ore./Gresham) set a new best for goals (six).
