BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming student-athlete
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) is the winner of the 2016 Douglas McDevitt Award, as announced by the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) via conference call on Thursday. The award is presented annually to the top graduating senior among the league's 16 men's teams.
Criteria for the award includes having an outstanding ability as a swimmer or diver, meeting academic standards of the competitor's school, having competed successfully during the student's senior swimming season, having outstanding performance at the conference championships and having a distinguished performance at a higher level of competition.
Martinez completed his four-year career as SLC's most-decorated swimmer. He is a six-time UNYSCSA champion, winning the 100 yard and 200 yard butterfly events in 2014, '15 and '16. In March, he became SLC's first-ever representative at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, swimming to Honorable Mention All-American accolades with a ninth-place finish in the 200 butterfly.
The UNYSCSA honored Martinez in 2014 with the Mark Randall Award, awarded to the swimmer of the meet at the league's four-day championship event.
Martinez leaves a legacy in the UNYSCSA as the association's record-holder in the 100 butterfly (48.24) and championship meet record-holder in the 200 butterfly (1:48.69). In addition to his six butterfly titles, Martinez also swam to six other top-10 UNYSCSA Championships finishes, placing in both butterfly events in 2012 while finishing among the top swimmers in the 200 individual medley during all four seasons.
