Flushing, N.Y. – September 10, 2011
The women's tennis team defeated Polytechnic University on the Fighting Blue Jays' home turf this Saturday, September 10, by a final score of 6-3. This win is the second for the Gryphons in as many match-ups, following a win over Yeshiva University on September 1 to kick off a promising season.
“I'm extremely happy with the team's performance this week, especially considering our limited practice due to the rain,” Head Coach Frank Fanning said following Saturday's win.
“I thought the team as a whole played very well,” he said, noting that SLC senior co-captain Mary Kim and junior Maddy Dessanti are both undefeated in singles and doubles play.
Kim bested her opponent, Blue Jay Kelly Burbank, 6-3, 6-0, in their fourth seed match-up. Kim's partnering with Dessanti was also fruitful with an 8-1 win at third seed doubles over Polytechnic's Stephanie Curbo and Sabrina Pardus. Dessanti and Curbo also faced off at fifth singles, with Dessanti winning decidedly 6-2, 6-0.
Gryphons second doubles pair senior Gwen Adorno and senior Antonia Verdi (Annapolis, Md./Key School) also defeated their Blue Jay competition, Sophia Eliseev and Kelly Burbank, 8-3.
Additionally, following the match, Coach Fanning highlighted Adorno's win in her second seed singles match, which he noted as the highest seed Adorno has played so far.
“Great match,” he said of her performance that pitted her again against Eliseev. Adorno won the match 6-2, 6-2.
Verdi also won her singles match against Polytechnic's Rebecca Sandora 6-1, 6-0.
The Gryphons next match is away against Bard on September 17.
