Women's Swimming Breaks Five Records at MSMC

Meet Results

NEWBURGH, N.Y.—
Though the Gryphons broke five school records in the meet, Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming lost to Mount Saint Mary College, 129-73, on the road at Kaplan Recreation Center on Saturday.

Combined with the men's team, Sarah Lawrence broke 12 program records on the day.

"Both teams really did a nice job today," remarked Head Coach Eric Mitchell. "Twelve school records in one meet is pretty remarkable. I put a few people in some new events for them and they stepped up and had great swims."

Sarah Lawrence (2-1) opened the meet with a win in the 400 yard medley relay led by the first of three record-breaking swims by sophomore Ariana Peschke (Topanga, Calif., La Reina). In the first leg, she split 1:00.02 to better her own record in the 100 backstroke.

In the 200 freestyle, Peschke's winning time of 2:03.26 was a nine-second improvement over the team's previous best set in 2003. She also won the 200 yard backstroke with a Gryphon record swim of 2:14.84, besting the mark set by teammate Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J., Mountain Lakes) in 2011.

Sophomore Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J., Morristown) lowered her record in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a mark of 12:17.06. In the 500 freestyle, she finished in second place in 6:03.49, missing a school-record mark by 0.4 second.

The Sarah Lawrence record board took its final hit when first-year swimmer Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif., Menlo-Atherton) finished in second place in the 200 yard butterfly with a performance of 3:04.70, improving on the previous time by nearly 19 seconds.

Despite the Gryphons' early lead in the team scoring, the depth and talent of Mount Saint Mary (2-1) quickly turned the tide to earn the hosts the victory.

After the holiday break, Sarah Lawrence returns to action on the road against College of New Rochelle on Nov. 28. The Gryphons then head to the three-day Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University, Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
