Softball Finishes the Season with a Win against CNR; Takes Fourth at End-of-the-Season Invitational

Bronxville, NY - May 6, 2012

In this last weekend of softball of the 2012 season, the Gryphons defeated the College of New Rochelle on Friday, May 4,  besting the Blue Angels 18-6 in five innings for the fledgling Gryphon team's first win of the season. Although Sarah Lawrence was shut out by St. Joe's-Brooklyn on Saturday at the Hudson Valley Women's Athletics Conference Invitational (0-12) and ultimately fell to CNR later that day (2-10), the talk of the tournament was the great improvement the Gryphons have undergone in a season of firsts for the team, which ended the season with just one senior and a slew of promising first years looking eagerly toward the 2013 season.

On Friday against CNR, the Blue Angels took the first game of the double-header 13-5, expecting a win going into the second. The Gryphons not only battled back, but standing tall behind new pitcher first year Leslie Martinez (Mission Viejo, Calif./Trabuco Hills), came out swinging in the bottom of the first, running in 11 of the games' 18 runs for the Gryphons' side before the Blue Angels could end the inning. Most notably at the plate was senior third baseman and catcher Lauren Stein (Redmond, Wash./Redmond)--also new to the catcher's position this year--who hit three doubles against CNR and had five RBIs in the game. Martinez also contributed a couple of strikeouts to the impressive efforts of the Gryphons' team, which also boasted two double-plays for the game.

On Saturday, St. Joe's-Brooklyn ran through the other teams (also beating second place finisher Albertus Magnus 8-nil), taking first place at the Invitational. Although Sarah Lawrence finished fourth for four teams at the Invitational, the Gryphons won two All-Conference Team spots, one going to stand-out veteran Stein and the other to first year and recent Sarah Lawrence 'Player of the Week' Anhad Hundal (New Delhi, India/Vasant Valley School), the centerfielder-turned-pitcher, who stepped up when the team most needed it in the second half of the season.

Congratulations to Stein, Hundal, Martinez, and the rest of the Gryphons Softball Team, who showed heart and dedication throughout the 2012 season!

    Go Gryphons! Go Green!
