Women’s Tennis Edges Yeshiva in Home Finale

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—In the Gryphons' final home match of 2013, Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis defeated Yeshiva University, 5-4, in a non-conference match at Andrews Courts on Wednesday.

Before the match, graduating senior Cecilia Ross (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) was honored in a brief ceremony to recognize her accomplishments with and dedication to the SLC women's tennis program.

Sarah Lawrence (7-7) got off to a hot start, sweeping the three doubles matches. Rookies Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) and Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) shutout their opponents in the No. 3 doubles match, 8-0, improving their record to 13-0 on the season and solidifying their spot as the most successful partnership in SLC regular-season history.

In the No. 1 doubles match, sophomore Nora Landes (Los Angeles, Calif./Cleveland Humanities Magnet) and junior Kayla Pincus (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) won their second-straight match, 8-6, while 2012 HVWAC Champions Lane Garber (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) and Sarah Fiordaliso (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) concluded their regular season with an 8-2 victory.

With the Gryphons in front, 3-0, after singles play, Yeshiva (3-7) rallied and put the pressure on the Green and White.
After taking wins in the No. 6 and No. 2 singles matches, the Maccabees leveled the score when Janna Eichenbaum squeaked out the No. 4 singles match.

SLC's Atkinson put SLC back in front with a 7-5, 7-5 win in the No. 3 singles match, but Yeshiva struck back with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ross.

With the match on the line, SLC's top player Landes cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 1 singles match, clinching the victory for the Gryphons and rounding out a 7-7 season for the team.

Sarah Lawrence concludes the 2013 campaign at the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championships on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
