FLUSHING, N.Y.—
Winning two of the nine tournament flights, Sarah Lawrence College women's tennis concluded the year as runner-up of the 2013 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Saturday.

Junior Kayla Pincus (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) captured her first individual title, becoming HVIAC Champion at No. 2 singles, while rookies Autumn Atkinson (Manasquan, N.J./George School) and Juliet Slade (St. Paul, Minn./Central) polished off a perfect 14-0 season by becoming HVIAC Champions at No. 3 doubles.

In addition, sophomore Nora Landes (Los Angeles, Calif./Cleveland Humanities Magnet) and Atkinson were recognized as members of the All-HVIAC women's tennis team. Landes was previously named to the 2012 All-Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference tennis team.

Pincus' title run was threatened in the semifinal round, as the Gryphon came just a few points away from making an early tournament exit. After a tightly-fought duel with her opponent from College of New Rochelle, Pincus trailed 2-0 in a decisive tiebreaker. The Gryphon finally pulled in front at 4-3 and closed out the semifinal match, 8-7(7-5).

In the championship match, Pincus led 5-2 and saw that lead partially evaporate when her Pratt Institute opponent broke serve and closed the gap to 5-4. Pincus refocused, took control of the match and won the final two games of her 8-5 victory to become HVIAC champion.

The remaining singles flights saw each of the five Gryphons win their semifinals to advance to their respective title matches.

At No. 1 singles, Landes blanked her Vaughn College opponent, 8-0, to advance to the final where she lost to a tough Pratt foe, 8-2. Top-seeded Atkinson advanced to the final of the No. 3 bracket with an 8-2 semifinal win before falling, 8-6.

Rookie Sarah Pyatt (Taos, N.M./Taos) cruised to the No. 4 singles championship match with an 8-0 semifinal triumph. She took a three-game lead in the championship, 6-3, but her Pratt opponent rallied, leaving Pyatt with a 9-7 loss.

Sophomore Sarah Fiordaliso (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) won her semifinal 8-2 but lost in the No. 5 singles championship, 8-4, and senior Cecilia Ross (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) shutout her No. 6 singles semifinal combatant, 8-0, before taking an 8-2 loss in the title match.

In doubles play, all three Gryphon pairs cruised to their championship matches, dropping only one game in semifinal play.

At No. 1 doubles, Landes and Pincus won game one of their title match, but were unable to keep momentum, falling 8-3.

In the No. 2 doubles flight, 2012 HVWAC Champions Lane Garber (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) and Fiordaliso trailed 7-3 in their championship match and looked to rally. After narrowing the score to 7-5, the Gryphons were one point away from winning their third-straight game, but Pratt came out on top, 8-5.

The last match on the courts featured a neck-and-neck contest between Atkinson & Slade and their second-seeded opponents from Pratt. The Cannoneers took an early 2-1 lead before the Gryphons took control at 4-3. At 6-5, Pratt won back-to-back games and looked to serve for the win, up 7-6.

Atkinson and Slade struck back, breaking serve to tie the match 7-7, and Atkinson held serve to put the Green and White back in front, 8-7. Though Pratt won the first point of the next game, Atkinson and Slade scored the next four straight, clinching a 9-7 win and a championship for the rookies.

Pratt won seven flights to earn the Cannoneers' third-straight women's tennis title. The Gryphons followed as runners-up for the third year, while St. Joseph's Brooklyn, CNR and Vaughn College rounded out the field.

Sarah Lawrence's 2013 campaign concludes after a 7-7 season that saw one of the most challenging schedules in recent history. SLC finished 3-1 in conference play, taking second in the league regular-season standings. As the season marked the Gryphons' last in the HVIAC, Pincus, Atkinson and Slade will not be able to defend their titles next year. In 2014, SLC looks forward to its first season as the newest member of the Skyline Conference.
